About this game:
Labor Day? Isn’t that only for the Soviets?
Nope, not in September! The US (and Canadian) Labor Day holiday is not the International Workers Day, though similar in origins and theme.
The day is supposed to have parades to celebrate “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, and to host a festival for the workers and their families. It was made a national holiday as an election year promise by president Grover Cleveland in 1894 following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike where railroad workers were striking for lower rent (in the company housing) and higher wages.
The strike was a national issue. President Grover Cleveland, faced with nervous railroad executives and interrupted mail trains, declared the strike a federal crime and deployed 12,000 troops to break the strike. Violence erupted, and two men were killed when U.S. deputy marshals fired on protesters in Kensington, near Chicago, but the strike was doomed, and quickly to ease the tempers United States Congress unanimously voted to approve rush legislation that made Labor Day a national holiday; President Grover Cleveland signed it into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.
He was not re-elected…
